Biographical note

Nane Wenhammar was born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1961, and later became a naturalized Mexican citizen. She completed a Bachelor of Science and Arts at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, in 1981. Subsequently, she pursued a Diploma in Educational Psychology at UNUM in 1982 and a Diploma in Art Therapy at UNAM from 2010 to 2012 in Mexico City. She participated in various workshops, including a painting, tapestry, and fabric workshop at Quinta Colorada Cultural House in 1986, a tapestry workshop at the San Carlos Academy in 1987, an enameling workshop at the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City in 1986, a paper making workshop at the "El Nigromante" Cultural Center in San Miguel de Allende in 1997, and biomaterial workshops at the Biology Studio with Edith Medina in Mexico City in 2018.

Nane is a multidisciplinary artist working with plant fibers and biomaterials. In the early stages of her artistic exploration, she delved into tapestry, gobelin, and fabrics. Starting in 1985, she began creating handmade paper from plants and developed three-dimensional artworks and installations using plant fibers. Currently, she researches biomaterials to create aesthetic expressions that raise awareness of our connection to nature.

She has participated in more than 54 group exhibitions and 11 solo exhibitions. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Ecuador, Switzerland, Spain, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Bulgaria, France, China, Belgium, and Mexico. Some notable exhibitions include "La Presencia de la Ausencia" at the Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza Museum in Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico, in 2019, "Adentro es afuera" at the Intersecciones Gallery in Avándaro, Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico, in 2015, "Traces Past" at the Morgan Conservatory Gallery in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, in 2019, "La tierra de origen femenino" at the G-011 Gallery in Mexico City in 2004, and "Primer Cuadro" at the Union of Plastic Artists of Mexico/International Association of Plastic Arts/United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Mexico City in 2005. She was selected for the Alberto Gironella Biennial in 2004, the Sixth and Ninth Paper Triennial in Switzerland in 2008 and 2017, the Shanghai International Paper and Fiber Art Biennial in China in 2019 and 2021, the International Biennial for Paper and Fiber Art in Taiwan in 2021/2022, and the International Paper Art Biennial in Haacht, Belgium (Kunststichting Perspektief vzw) in 2022. Her work is part of the collections of the Directorate of Education and Culture in Cuenca, Ecuador, and the Fengxian Museum in China. She was awarded at the 10th Amateras International Annual Paper Art Exhibition in Bulgaria in 2019. Since 2012, she has been a teacher and curriculum advisor for the History of Art and Art subjects at UMA, the University of the Environment (High School, Bachelor's, and Master's levels) in Valle de Bravo, State of Mexico.

Recently, she was part of the El Aleph Arts and Sciences Festival at UNAM, as part of the Environmental Frontiers, where she created DEOM (design, stage, and other materialities) with attire made from plant fibers and biomaterials for Shakespeare opera "A Midsummer Night´s Dream"; at the School of Medicine Palace in 2022.

Semblanza

Nane Wenhammar nació en Quito, Ecuador, en 1961, naturalizada mexicana. Cursó la Licenciatura en Ciencias y Artes en la Universidad de Concordia, en Montreal, Canadá (1981). Posteriormente cursa un Diplomado en Psicología Educativa en la UNUM (1982) y un Diplomado en Terapia de Arte en la UNAM (2010-2012), Ciudad de México.

Participó en distintos talleres: Taller de pintura, gobelino, telas en la Casa de Cultura Quinta Colorada (1986), Taller de tapiz en la Academia San Carlos (1987), Taller de esmaltes en el Museo de Antropología de la CDMX (1986), taller de manufactura de papel en el Centro Cultural “El Nigromante” en San Miguel de Allende (1997) y Talleres de biomateriales en Biology Studio con Edith Medina en la Ciudad de México (2018). Nane es una artista multidisciplinaria en fibras vegetales y biomateriales, al principio de su búsqueda artística incursiona en tapiz, gobelino y telas. A partir de 1985, empieza a elaborar papel hecho a mano con plantas y realiza obra tridimensional e instalaciones con fibras vegetales. Actualmente, investiga biomateriales creando manifestaciones estéticas que permiten crear conciencia de nuestro nexo con la naturaleza.

Ha participado en más de 54 Exposiciones Colectivas y 11 Individuales. Su obra se ha exhibido en Estados Unidos, Ecuador, Suiza, España, Reino Unido, Filipinas,Taiwán, Corea del Sur, Bulgaria, Francia, China, Bélgica y México. Tales como “La Presencia de la Ausencia” en el Museo Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza, Valle de Bravo, Estado de México en 2019, “Adentro es afuera” en la Galería Intersecciones, Avándaro, Valle de Bravo, Estado de México en 2015, "Traces Past", en Morgan Conservatory Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio, Estados Unidos de América en 2019 , “La tierra de origen femenino”, Galería G-011, Ciudad de México, México en 2004 y “Primer Cuadro” Unión de Artistas Plásticos de México/Asociación Internacional de Artes Plásticas/Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura, Ciudad de México en 2005. Ha sido seleccionada para la Bienal de Alberto Gironella en 2004, la Sexta y novena Trienal de Papel en Suiza en 2008 y 2017, la Bienal de Arte en Papel de Shanghai, China en 2019 y 2021, la “International Biennial for Paper and Fiber Art” 2021/2022 en Taiwán y para la Bienal Internacional de Arte en Papel en Haacht, Bélgica (“Kunststichting Perspektiefvzw”) en 2022. Su obra forma parte de colecciones de la Dirección de Educación y Cultura de Cuenca, Ecuador y en el Museo de Fengxian, China. Ha sido premiada en “10th Amateras International Annual Paper Art Exhibition” en Bulgaria, en el año 2019. Desde 2012 hasta la actualidad es docente y asesora de la malla curricular de la asignatura de Historia del Arte y Arte en la UMA, Universidad del Medio Ambiente (Preparatoria, Licenciatura y Maestría), Valle de Bravo, Estado de México. Recientemente ha sido parte del Festival de Artes y Ciencias El Aleph de la UNAM, en el marco de Fronteras del Medio Ambiente, realizó DEOM (diseño, escena y otras materialidades) con indumentaria (elaborada con fibras vegetales y biomateriales) para la ópera “Sueño de una noche de verano” de Shakespeare en el Palacio de Escuela de Medicina en 2022.
